About this listen
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER FOR 2023
At a busy festival site on a warm spring night, a baby lies alone in her pram, her mother having vanished into the crowds.
A year on, Kim Gillespie's absence casts a long shadow as her friends and loved ones gather deep in the heart of South Australian wine country to welcome a new addition to the family.
Aaron Falk, federal investigator, is joining the celebrations. But as he soaks up life in the lush valley, he begins to suspect this tight-knit group may be more fractured than it seems. As hidden truths slowly emerge, Falk faces the darkest of questions.

Excellent storyline
I found the story in the midst of wine country compelling listening. The various strands came together as we came to know the characters and their relationships. I am always intrigued by the role of the central character and his relationship with a country town and State authorities. The story was solid and sufficiently quick moving to keep tuned in. I am a fan of Jane Harper and her writing style and her country settings. Highly recommend the book.

Excellent story telling flicking between past and present seamlessly
The past never truly leaves you and this eerie small town story with its complex relationships affirms this.

Double Mystery
Harper provides a great unraveling of an old mystery. Faulk a mostly reliable Aussie hero.

An excellent next installment
None of her subsequent books have quite lived up to "The Dry" but this is probably the next best. Jane has a distinctive style, I believe you can hear her journalist background - likely it will appeal or it won't - for me, I find it paints the scenes and characters very well. The time jumps can be a little disorienting if you aren't concentrating but mostly flows clearly.
I enjoy this narration. I like that he doesn't try to "perform", it's like having a book read to you around the fireplace. A few technical mistakes were a bit distracting but overall the ideal narration.

I have listened to all of Jane Harpers previous stories and this one doesn't disappoint. I very much enjoyed this book.

Loved it
Another great novel from Jane Harper!! The story was very classic Harper and the writing was incredible, giving a vivid picture of south Australian small town wine regions,
The only issue I had was that the editing on the podcast seemed dodgy, there were several points in the story where the narrator repeated a line. Thought it was my phone/headphones at first but after the third time I actually watched the timer and there was no pauses or rewinds when it happened, so it’s in the actual final edit.
Didn’t impact too much but it’s there - otherwise loved it!!
