About this listen

The basis for the Meryl Streep film A Cry in the Dark: the dramatic true story of a mother’s worst nightmare and the murder trial that shocked Australia.

On a camping trip at Ayer’s Rock, the Chamberlain family’s infant daughter disappeared in the middle of the night. Her distraught mother, Lindy, claimed she saw a dingo carry her off into the Australian outback. Two years later, their tragedy worsened when, without a murder weapon, a body, or even a motive, a jury convicted Lindy Chamberlain of killing her own daughter. The public cheered.

John Bryson, a trial lawyer and award-winning journalist, deconstructs the factors that led to a seemingly reasonless incarceration and the public attitude that demanded it. With this book, he began to sway popular opinion in the Chamberlains’ favor by discussing the failures on the part of the police, forensics team, and press.

Winner of the CWA Gold Dagger and the inspiration for the film A Cry in the Dark starring Meryl Streep, Evil Angels presents an impartial analysis of the most notorious miscarriage of justice in Australian history. It serves as a reminder of the dangers of blindly searching for a conviction, the importance of scientific accuracy, the volatility of the media, and the ease with which a nation can fall prey to bigoted thinking. Written with literary finesse, this is one of the 20th century’s most important - and thoughtful - works of true crime.

Boring and no relevance

I got this book and it was beyond boring and eight chapters in. I haven’t heard a dam thing about Lindy Chamberlain or her baby and Boyce is too slow, makes my boring job worse.

Every Australian needs to listen to this book.

Cyclones and crocodiles. The standard fare from Australia’s Northern Territory. Best not to be there when a cyclone is coming, and be careful of the wildlife. It could eat you. Down south —to us— it was almost amusing.
Then Cyclone Tracy arrived in Darwin on Christmas Day 1974 and left nothing standing. Wow. This is serious.
And then a dingo took Azaria.
Both events brutal, shocking. Just unbelievable.
What became more shocking was how the people changed. The groundswell that saw people begin to say that the baby’s mother had killed her daughter. People we knew. How could they think this?
The Coroner, Dinny Barritt explained what happened, live on television, and found that the dingo did it.
But the whispered groundswell continued. People we loved. How could they think this?
The timeline of the night showed that it was impossible for the motiveless Mother to have had the time to do it. But our court system didn’t care.
Our adversarial system is not interested in Justice, only winning.
In fact, in the Australian law syllabus, there is no subject called Justice.
They say, ‘Justice is what you get when you run out of money!’
When John Bryson published ‘Evil Angels’ it was the first time that someone had linked all the pieces of the puzzle together.
It’s exceptional research, exceptional journalism —an astonishing book.
Justice at last.
They say, when charged with murder, ALWAYS demand a jury trial.
I am not sure about that. If I am further north than the Tropic of Capricorn, I’ll settle for a Judge Alone trial, every time.
Because I just read this jaw-dropping book.
