About this listen

Detective Inspector Siobhan Clarke is investigating the death of a senior lawyer during a robbery.

But the case becomes more complex when a note is discovered, indicating that this may have been no random attack. When local gangster Big Ger Cafferty receives an identical message, Clarke decides that the recently retired John Rebus may be able to help. He's the only man Cafferty will open up to, and together the two old adversaries might just stand a chance of saving Cafferty's skin.

But a notorious Glasgow crime family has arrived in Edinburgh, too, tailed by a team of undercover detectives. There's something they want, and they'll stop at nothing to get it. DI Malcolm Fox's job is to provide the undercover squad with local expertise, but he's soon drawn in too deep as the two cases look like colliding.

Meanwhile, an anonymous killer stalks the night-time streets, focussed on revenge. It's a game of dog eat dog in the city as in the wild. Even Dogs in ihe Wild brings back Ian Rankin's greatest characters in a story exploring the darkest corners of our instincts and desires.

Murky waters in the middle but a strong ending

Mainly listening to this late at night and must confess to maybe losing the somewhat meandering plot midway but it all came good with a strong satisfying ending. Story consists of Edinburgh gang rivalry and historic child abuse with Rebus supping with a longish spoon in his relations with Cafferty who in fact does have his own moral code, just not aligned with societal norms!
And I must admit I am warming to the character of Malcolm Fox.
Perhaps not his best but still very good.

This book made me cry

It’s tragic that child abuse never ends effects rippling forever. So so sad. Thank you, Ian, thank you, James.

Ian keeps it up

Another superbly paced book with excellent narration right down to the gravely voice of villains.

High quality Rebus

A most satisfying listen. Tightly plotted and well-written dialogue that chart a series of murders, gangland rivalries and long buried abuses.
The narration is exemplary.

Always great

Classic Rebus, flawed, smart, very human. A good story, greed corruption and the seedy side of Edinburgh and Glasgow. A narrator who is very easy to listen to.

A fantastic series

Rankin and Macpherson offer so many reasons to keep downloading these books: Rankin provides great characterisation, great plots, well researched police details and authentic Scottish flavour. Macpherson is a skilled and exciting narrator who brings it all to full colour. Just such a great duo.

A complex and dark tale of murder and retribution

A masterful plot, fantastically performed. I thoroughly enjoy Ian Rankin's characters and story telling.
