I sine to romaner, DEN DER LYVER og DET FØRSTE JEG TÆNKER PÅ, henlægger Ida Jessen scenen til Hvium, en lille fiktiv by beliggende ved Limfjorden. En del af denne samlings noveller foregår også i Hvium, ligesom en del af personerne er gengangere fra romanerne. Vi er bl.a. på Brogården, hvor Pauli og Ragna driver landbrug og minkfarm, og vi hører perifert om Manne, den unge pige, der optræder i begge romanerne, men novellesamlingen bevæger sig også uden for det lille samfund, bl.a. foregår nogle af novellerne i Norge og København.
