Publisher's Summary

Hadrian Marlowe, privileged first son of a Duke, was destined for greatness, and he has become a legend. The Sun-Slayer. The Breaker of Sieges. The Crusher of Civilisations. His is a story which defined the course of worlds.

This novel is not that story - not the only laid out in the history books, charting the 300 years of his life. Rather this is Hadrian's story, told in his own worlds. Of being passed over by his father for rule in favour of his younger brother and sent to a military academy against his wishes. Of being kidnapped in transit to that planet and sold into slavery on a planet at the edge of our war against the Cielcen...and of how he used their eventual attack to claw his way back into the dangers and opportunities of politics.

Remarkable. Best book ever.

Wow, truly just an incredible story through and through. A layered, charismatic and very likeable protagonist retelling a story throughout a well thought engaging and immersive universe leaving me excited to plunge into the remaining books in the sun eater series.

Just get through this book

This book will get better. Just get through it. Ignore the similarity to Dune. It gets better

Good start good end boring middle

The middle was the worst part it took over six hours of him been a prisoner before he did anything and this is 6 real time hours the MC love interest is the worst when ever she sees something she doesn’t like she treat the MC as if he was the source of all evil when he not the ruler of the empire and she a massive hypocrite

Review

the style of the storty reminds me of Name of the wind, which i consider a possitive.
only part i didn't like was that the volume of the narrator jumps abit up and down. it matched to the tone of the scenes well but made setting volume of my headphones tricky sometimes.

Narrator is excruciating to listen to

Love that Audible allowed me to return this title for a credit. Make sure you listen to a sample first to decide if you can deal with this reader. I managed to get through 3 chapters to figure out if I will give the paperback a try or not. As other's have stated there are some extreme similarities with Dune in these early chapters. I may give the paperback a try in the future, so for now can't really comment on the story, but seems to have some potential.
As to the narration, is this an AI reader? The reading follows a repetitive, mechanical phrasing and cadence no matter the content. The reader practically yells the first few words of each sentence in a fast, staccato delivery, then tapers off dramatically in both volume and cadence. It is so distracting and difficult to listen to that I cannot concentrate on the story. There is no way I could suffer through 25 hours of this!

Such a struggle.

I honestly feel like there is a good book somewhere hidden in this one. I wish the author would take this book, remove all of the random redundant fluff, remove all of the blatant stolen theams (and sometimes what feels like almost direct lines) from the king killer chronicles and re-release it. I understand that all fantasy novels share some theams and ideas but this was just too much. Also, it was such a chore, I had to push myself to finish it. but hey, alot of people love this series, so maybe it gets better in subsequent books. I sure hope so because as I said above, there is a good book there, it just needs to be shaved down and polished.
