About this listen

Naomi Novik’s stunning series of novels follow the adventures of Cpt Laurence and his dragon Temeraire as they travel from the shores of Britain to China and Africa.

Laurence and Temeraire made a daring journey across vast and inhospitable continents to bring home a rare Turkish dragon from the treacherous Ottoman Empire.

Kazilik dragons are firebreathers, and Britain is in greater need of protection than ever, for while Laurence and Temeraire were away, an epidemic struck British shores and is killing off her greatest defence – her dragon air force is slowly dying.

The dreadful truth must be kept from Napoleon at all costs. Allied with the white Chinese dragon, Lien, he would not hestitate to take advantage of Britain's weakness and launch a devasting invasion.

Hope lies with the only remaining healthy dragon – Temeraire cannot stay at home, but must once again venture into the unknown to help his friends and seek out a cure in darkest Africa.

An epidemic

Kazilik dragons are firebreathers, and Britain is in greater need of protection than ever, for while Laurence and Temeraire were away, an epidemic struck British shores and is killing off her greatest defence – her dragon air force is slowly dying! This had me in a panic!! It is a pivotal book in the series. Fantasy and history give us wonderful characters like the comical Iskeirka, the enormous Maximus and Laurence and Temeraire as they journey through Africa to find a cure!

Temeraire forever!

Am loving this series. The setting and the fantasy are great and I enjoy how the author includes behavioural challenges of the dragons and addresses contemporary topics like gender equality but in a way that fits with the real world historical period.

part of a chapter is missing..

love this author, and love this whole series, but having read them all, I noticed the story jumps strangely at one point!

Struggled to get through it.

The story is particularly long winded and has many aspects which seem disjointed and not particularly pertinent to the overall plot. The story at self could’ve been condensed to a much shorter novel without any impact on the quality.

Absolutely outrageous

This is advertised as an UNABRIDGED audiobook and yet it misses a section at 7:24:24 mark. I know because I went to my paperback and checked because I knew that there ought to have been a section after Laurence drew lots that explained that he noted a section of bark denoting which stick was the longer and chose it to deliberately make himself the leader of the group to meet the king and that section was missing. If I pay for an unabridged book I damned well better get an unabridged book! I wish I could complain for false advertising!

missing portions of the story

While an enjoyable series and premise for the story, it is very hard to enjoy when portions of the book seem to have been carelessly edited out. An entire chunk of plot is missing 11min 30sec into chapter 12, which leaves out what I can only imagine is very important information, the reunion of two characters. Other skips are also noticeable, and confusing until I realised that the story was skipping oddly along. I can't recommend this version of the audiobook until it has undergone a review and correction by the publisher.
