Optaron por unirse a los movimientos revolucionarios en América Latina. Trabajaron en parroquias de Bogotá y Cartagena hasta que fueron deportados por sus actividades subversivas. Entonces regresaron clandestinamente a Colombia para incorporarse al incipiente Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), en cuyas filas había muerto su héroe, el cura revolucionario Camilo Torres Restrepo. Pero de los tres, solo sobrevivió Manuel Pérez, quien, más adelante, llegaría a ser comandante de esa organización guerrillera hasta su muerte en 1998.
