About this listen

Winner of the first International Fantasy Award. George R. Stewart (1895-1980) was a Professor of English at the University of California. He published a number of novels, including two studies of natural catastrophe, Storm and Fire. Earth Abides is his only work of science-fiction.

Published to great acclaim in 1949, Earth Abides is generally regarded as the classic tale of life struggling on after a global disaster. This audio edition celebrates the 60th anniversary of this science-fiction masterwork and includes a special introduction written and read by Hugo Award-winning writer Connie Willis.

A mysterious plague has destroyed the vast majority of the human race. Isherwood Williams returns from a wilderness field trip to discover that civilization has vanished during his absence. Eventually, in San Francisco, he encounters a female survivor who becomes his wife. Around them and their children a small community develops, but rebuilding civilization is beyond their resources, and gradually they return to a simpler way of life.

Critic Reviews

"A profound, poetic, post-holocaust novel of immense stature: so special I wanted mine to be the only copy." (Garry Kilworth)

Not Just a Disaster Novel

Earth Abides, by the master of disaster novel sub-genre, is not only a disaster novel. it's also a novel about rebirth, recreation, hope and the permanent things in our life, such as they are. Read and enjoy to the fullest and let your emotions roam with Ish across the decades while the world changes and things prove to be transitionary. One of the best novels ever, hands down.

Great read

It’s not exactly what I thought this book would be, although I am satisfied and was highly entertained by the story. I thought there would of been more adventure within the pages, that was my only perception leading into this book.

Overall though a nice surprise to what the book became and very smart and well thought of. The author did a great job to keep the reader wanting more.

Narrator done and excellent job. Worth the read if you like post apocalyptic stories.

Great book

Great storyline. Well written. Some unsavory views towards minority groups but relevant to the times.

Unbelievable

What an incredible story- I have read this book over 40 years about 20 times and I enjoy it every time. I hope one day
someone will make this into a movie or mini series.

great story

Excellent book, well written and the narration was very good. I just would of preferred more detail on the travel he did before meeting Emma. Also I think the story would have been better with more growing than "scavenging", but that was also a worry of Ish too.

one chapter is all about sheep

Boring, 1 chapter talks about sheep. the repetitive story line of each animal becomes predictable. Horrible story and I wouldn't recommend as an audio book.
