Publisher's Summary
Based on real historical events.
A time for vengeance. German frontier: Close to the Rhine, a Roman centurion, Lucius Tullus, prepares to take his soldiers on patrol. On the opposite side of the river, German tribes are resentful of the harsh taxes about to be imposed upon them. Suspicious that there might be unrest, Tullus knows that his men's survival will be determined not just by their training and discipline, but by his leadership.
A time for war. What neither Tullus nor his commander, Governor Varus, realise is that ranged against them is the charismatic chieftain and trusted ally of Rome, Arminius, who has long been plotting to drive the Romans from the tribal lands east of the Rhine.
A time to die. As Varus' legions prepare to leave their summer encampment, thousands of warriors - directed by Arminius - are massing nearby. Eager to throw off the Roman yoke, the tribesmen prepare a deadly ambush. Only the gods can save the Romans now....

Top of the top shelf!
Few books come close to the sheer adrenaline ride that is this masterpiece! The intensity and ferocity of the battle scenes unequaled. The human, emotional aspects of the horrors explored in this reasonably well known story in Roman history makes you forget all you thought you knew about Varus' Legions. Ben Kane - thank you for this amazing ride!

Impressive and thrilling
Loved this, moreso after the epilogue where the author describes how he's augmented historical fact and tried to keep faith with history to create this thrilling tale around and actual event bringing it to live with graphic detail based on research and experience. Fantastic reading by the author and huge respect for the author.

Fascinating & action packed.
An excellent historical context and events made visceral by a excellent writer and a fabulous narration. I learnt a lot from the novel while totally entertained by a period that never fails to be fascinating for examining the motivations of earlier civilisations. Great to see the the ancient Germans treated with the balance they deserve and not a cheer squad for the Romans that some writers of the period fall into. If you like B Cromwell then this is for you.

Lacking in Grit and Detail
Containing a bunch of shallow one dimensional characters and lacking a decent plot this tepid book doesn't do justice to the ferocity and savagery of the epic historical events it attempts to describe.
The author understands nothing of the landscape, the people or their equipment and clothing. I wouldn't consider any of the characters fit for a pillow fight on the Disney channel let alone for a pitched battle in the Teutoburg forest in which mighty Rome lost 3 legions to the wild Germanic tribesmen.
Ok so this plot is easy to follow and the writing style is gentle, and if you like conventional characters in a generic historical / fantasy setting then you will enjoy this book. However if you desire complex characters covered in the mud blood and grit of important historical events then, like me, you need to keep looking for something better than this.
Ironically, after 13 hours of wishing that the author had some experience as a reenactor, in the historical notes he actually talked about his reenactment experiences.... so its not the knowledge that he lacks, merely an effective way to write about it, and thats a shame. If I had to review this book in a single word it would be "Bland".
