About this listen

Julius Caesar has been assassinated. A nation is in mourning. Revenge will be bloody... Rome's great hero has been brutally murdered by his most trusted allies. While these self-appointed Liberatores seek refuge in the senate, they have underestimated one man: Caesar's adopted son Octavian, a man whose name will echo through history as Augustus Caesar.

Uniting with his great rival Mark Antony, Octavian will stop at nothing to seek retribution and avenge his father's death. His greatest hatred is reserved for Brutus, Caesar's childhood friend and greatest ally, now leader of the conspirators. As the people take to the streets of Rome, the Liberatores must face their fate. Some flee the city; others will not escape mob justice. Not a single one will die a natural death. And the reckoning will come for Brutus on the sweeping battlefield at Philippi.

The epic fifth novel in Conn Iggulden's bestselling 'Emperor' series.

Tethering on great but not quite there

I loved the other emperor books and waited many years for this one.

The final battle sounds like it was a difficult one to describe and detail. But the lack of detail of the fight was disappointing for me personally.

A lot of times there was not anything really going on, but felt like conn tried to get too much into too few pages and the result was little detail.
That said I did enjoy it and look for are to more

The most exciting Book in the series but...

I really loved this last book of the Emperor series. Most exciting and informative learning of the days of retribution after Julius Caesar's assassination.

Listening to Conn's work, all of a sudden I love learning about history.

After listening to the previous four books it took me a long time to get used to this narrator. I found his voice dull in the extreme in comparison. But still...don't let that put you off a fantastic book. I strongly advise you to listen to all the books in order.

Another great story but the reader was painful

Three different readers over 5 books distracted from the enjoyment. The historical note was important.

distracting reader

I didn't enjoy Michael Healey's presentation
and found his pronunciation very distracting. story was good but a bit too much battle description for me.

Performer was bored.

Michael Healy seemed tired or disinterested or both. Between his monotone style and gulps for air the story was hard to follow.
This book seemed very disconnected and rushed compared to the others in the series, despite its aim to follow on. Octavian had command of his own legion, sat at the right hand of Julius in book 4 and seemed like an unknown child in this book. Mark Anthony ruled Rome in Julius’s absence until his return with Cleopatra yet they suggest this is their first time meeting. The previous book had Julius bring her to Rome whereupon she was bound to have meet Mark Anthony. Should have stopped after the first 4 brilliant books. A credit that’s lost forever.

Good story, horrible narrator

I only just managed to get to the end of this. The narrator is terrible. There is no excitement in his voice and the story suffers as a result.

Great Book

Brilliant story, amazingly written. It's a pity he didn't write one more book about what happened after the Battle of Philippi.

Reader

The reader of this iBook is very much of lesser standard than the reader of the first of the books in this series

One of the best in the series

A good wrap up after one of history‘s most famous assassination. I’m sad it’s over, I wish Conn would write another five …
