About this listen

The world's toughest car race. Twenty-one days of searing heat and rock-hard desert tracks; of blowouts and breakdowns; of subterfuge and sabotage. Ten thousand miles of dust and glory. Driving at breakneck speed over Australia's roughest roads and through the most appalling conditions imaginable, six competitors break free from the pack and fight for the lead, gradually finding themselves entangled in a web of deceit, betrayal and danger. 'Dust and Glory' is best-selling author Evan Green's stirring account of the most gruelling race of them all ‒ a hair-raising, careering ride that accelerates to a gripping and unforgettable finish. Bolinda Audio wishes to advise that this audiobook contains strong language and adult themes which may be offensive to some listeners.©1990 Evan Green (P)2013 Bolinda Publishing Contemporary Fiction

Bower brings justice to another masterpiece

This is the first book I’ve read by Evan Green and can’t wait to read another. I’ll be choosing one that Bower narrates.
Dust and Glory is gripping from beginning to end, taking the reader on a descriptive, exciting journey around Australia….in the mid 1950s. Love the characters, and how some of them, such as Gelignite Jack Murray and Jack Davey were real-life big names. This book has me wanting to pack up and hit the road.
Narrator Humphrey Bower is my favourite, he is simply brilliant at bringing a book to life. I only came across this book because I googled books narrated by Bower. Anything he reads seems to have a pulse of of it’s own and magnifies the story to its best capabilities - the reader feels the emotions of the characters.

An amazing ride!

Fantastic narration of a lively story filled with twists and turns as it follows a reliability car trial around Australia in the 1950s. Drama and tension as well as lots of larrikin humour which was narrated with flair.

A forgotten treasure

Would you consider the audio edition of Dust and Glory to be better than the print version?

I read the audio version 30 years ago, so I would have to say no. It took me 30 years to remember the name after lots of google searching the race.

What other book might you compare Dust and Glory to, and why?

NA

Have you listened to any of Humphrey Bower’s other performances? How does this one compare?

NA

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Loved the whole thing.

Any additional comments?

This was a favorite book of mine for over 30 years, I am so glad I found it and anyone who is interested in Australia in the 50s should read it, or people from other countries who want to know what Australia was like back then. My dad remembered when the redex trial went through Tallimba NSW, so it had a special memory for me.
