About this listen

Dungeon Walkers brave the depths of the dungeons for personal gain - clearing a dungeon means dungeon points to purchase gear with, but more importantly, perks. Perks are the main reason Walkers put their lives on the line. Every time a dungeon is cleared the first time, a Walker gets a choice of three perks that could change their lives.

Not every Walker makes it out alive. When someone dies in the dungeon, their soul is fragmented into four shards, which can be purchased for dungeon points. Collecting all four shards and taking them to a temple of the Goddess means the dead can live again. There is a sub-sect of Walkers that makes it their goal to bring the dead back from the dungeons - they’re called the Rescue Squad.

Stern is intent on joining the ranks of Rescue Squad. Finally done with his six months at the academy, he is about to make his first run through a dungeon. It will not be easy - he doesn’t have a crew, or a team, to run it with. Stern is an irregular - someone born with unusual perks - and unfortunately, looking like the blighted. Being seen as blighted has made Stern’s life hell, but he keeps pushing on, intent on making his goal real.

Despite his hardships, he’s been blessed with the unusual perk of his life-long friend, Pawly. Pawly is a polydactyl Maine Coon, who is protective of her friend and eager to help him reach his goal. With his friend beside him, Stern is ready to start his adventure.

Not the best from Daniel Schinhofen

Typically enjoy his work but the MC in this one just seems a bit boring and inconsistent in his character. Basically can be broken into 3 versions; 1) moody, very competent and independent; 2) compassionate kind and righteous 3) Golden retriever that plays fetch (opposite to type 1). There are some explanations from the story as to why he is like this but just results in a less enjoyable character to read about. I found the cat to be more enjoyable than the MC. Also halfway through the story it just changed from an adventure story to just a slice of life with not much happening with a focus on relationships etc... Typically Daniel includes relationship building well in an interesting way but this just felt a bit flat.

Still going to read/listen to the next one hopping the adventure side to the story comes more into focus

Great series, ended too soon

Love this book and the entire series, yes, it is mildly different to the authors more popular works but it is just as well written, enjoyable and is a great adventure/slice of life book.

Great start but a little gag worthy at the end

This book disappointed it started great, well written even though I hadn’t read the preceding related books. I have no problem with non-standard relationships but the last 1/3 of the book was basically just discussing their feelings for each other. I really wanted to like it but it was just horrible.

Started out good got weird near the end

The book started out good but kind of got wierd near the end. It made me lose some respect for the the characters and question why I bought it in the first place. The less I know about the better.

The first chapter alone made me want to gtfo.

The first chapter alone made me want to gtfo. The boring cat stuff and the fact that they started the book with ' I'm so better than theses locals smh ' and the random anecdotes based off his transmigrator dad or something get old super fast. you have the usual forced conflict, mysterious past that can be used to get him out of trouble. a random amount of money from his backstory that we know nothing about. then using that wealth to buy the affections of a new party member. There was literally another party that went in a dungeon to retrieve the fragments at the goodness of their hearts then he is like nope - you get money - I get credit... then this blighted status shows down the entire novel. we get it he has a bloody desiesed apparence we don't need every - single - character to comment 🙄 about it geez 😒 . The dungeon stuff was boring as well, nothing standing out the choices are decided beforehand and the other options are examples of what other walkers have.

tldr : formulaic boring book.
