Publisher's Summary

Re-release of best-selling 2009 novel - What happens when Rory travels halfway across the country to meet the girl of his dreams? Certainly not what he expected.

Rory's just a simple southern boy from St. Antoine's Parish, Louisiana, but he knows what he wants - the girl of his dreams, reclusive and mysterious artist Ran Yamane. He's loved her since junior high school, and now he has the chance to meet her. He chucks everything and travels 1,500 miles to Anime Expo in Long Beach just so he can tell her. He's determined that nothing and nobody are going to stand in his way.

Turns out, Ran Yamane isn't a girl, but he gets that a lot. People come to him with teddy bears and chocolates and disappointment by the truckload. He's trusted fans in the past and paid the price. So when he meets Rory he is understandably wary, but resigned. He isn't prepared for his magnetic attraction to the young man, Rory's apparent willingness to overlook his gender, and the chaos that ensues when his number one fan (and psycho stalker) shows up to get revenge.

Be prepared to suspend belief and be frustrated!

I love most of ZA Maxfield’s books, she’s creative, evocative, and has led me on some wild and amazing rides. Sometimes though, the wildness can tip over into an unreality that requires too much suspended belief and that’s the case here. Ladies’ man and southern boy Rory has always been mesmerised by the graphic art of Ran Yamane and when he finds out Ran will be at a nearby expo, he goes to express his undying love for her. Although Ran is as beautiful as he imagines, unfortunately for Rory, Ran is a man, but the two form an intense insta-attachment anyway. More unfortunately, Ran is being stalked by a well-resourced psychopath and it’s not long before the maiming, beatings, and murders begin. It’s a rude and unsettling shock when this sweet story suddenly sours and I nearly gave up - be warned. Even if you can set aside the absurd law enforcement decisions and advice, it’s hard not to get frustrated with Ran and Rory’s treatment of each other. Rory tends to view Ran as a delicate princess and his underlying misogyny of the feminine in Ran is often condescending. Ran fights his own feelings for Rory which is equally unhelpful. The whole plot gets drawn out way longer than it needs to as the two fail to communicate, get the wrong end of the stick, or just fail to be in the right place at the right time. Audio narrator Greg Boudreaux does his always excellent best here.

story : 3 1/2 - 4 stars

You really need to suspend disbelief and just get taken along for the ride with Drawn Together. I was lulled into a false sense of security initially due to the very sweet/cute initial meeting between Rory & artist Ran Yamane, when Rory finally realises that his dream girl is actually a guy......and then the storyline completely veers off into crazy psycho stalker land.

Even though Yamane wasn't the best at keeping himself safe I couldn't help but like him. Rory was my favourite - he was such a sweetheart, he fell hard for Yamane and was determined to protect him to the best of his ability. A lot of action as these 2 try to keep themselves alive and one step ahead of the stalker.

Loved listening to Greg Boudreaux, especially his performance of Rory. There were a lot of different characters, and the narrator made it very easy to follow along and differentiate between all of them.
