About this listen
Aram Raythe has the power to challenge the gods. He just doesn't know it yet.
Aram thinks he’s nothing but a misfit from a small fishing village in a dark corner of the world. As far as Aram knows, he has nothing, with hardly a possession to his name other than a desire to make friends and be accepted by those around him, which is something he’s never known. But Aram is more.
Much, much more.
Unknown to him, Aram bears within him a gift so old and rare that many people would kill him for it, and there are others who would twist him to use for their own sinister purposes. These magics are so potent that Aram earns a place at an academy for warrior mages training to earn for themselves the greatest place of honor among the armies of men: dragon riders.
Aram will have to fight for respect by becoming not just a dragon rider, but a Champion, the caliber of mage that hasn’t existed in the world for hundreds of years. And the land needs a Champion. Because when a dark god out of ancient myth arises to threaten the world of magic, it is Aram the world will turn to in its hour of need.

Fantastic narration
I loved Ben Farrow’s narration. And the book is good, too :) A classic and well constructed coming-of-age tale eloquently told. You don’t have to be a young adult to enjoy this book.

Dragon Mage
I was hooked right from the start of this book.
The story of a boy who has been picked on all his very young life, just because he is a little different. This really resonated with me as I have a son that this happened to as well. Both in the end turn out to be stellar young men.
Arran is rescued from a beating one day by another boy and so the story unfolds.
The book has some nasty villains, magic, dragons and even a touch of romance, What more could you want.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is into fantasy fiction.
The writing by ML Spencer is very good and the narrator Ben Farrow did an excellent job .

Elegant Mastery of Fantasy - Get this Book!
This is my first review since joining Audible in 2017.
The creativity, empathy and compassion this book ignites was outstanding.
To draw parallels with magic with something so simple, complex and elegant was amazing. Further the main character and his development….. bravo; absolutely brilliant.
If you’re reading this review: Get this book bro!
And if you’re the author reading this review, again how did you even think to weave the magic and character concepts, mind blown!

Great characters and story!
Great book. I love the depiction of friendship and the main character awesome. This is a wonderful thriw back to classolic fantasy but with the character focus and hard magic sysyem of modern fantasy.
The world building and lore really works. I hope we get from.this world and fr Aram, Marcus and their dragons!

Must Read for S&S and Classic Fantasy Fans
I loved this book so much!! It made me remember why I fell in love with classic and epic fantasy in the first place. So please, don't mind me, while I gush all over the place while still trying to remain somewhat coherent like the grown adult I know hides within me somewhere.
Dragon Mage felt like an ode to all of the best elements of fantasy I read growing up, the magic, the tropes, relationships, high stakes, and good versus evil.
Our chosen one is neurodiverse Aram, bullied and ostracised for being different to the other children in his small fishing village. Aram longs for the day he can join the fisherman and tie his knots for the fishing ropes. When a legendary bard comes to his village and selects Aram and his new and only friend Markus as apprentices, Aram's life quickly is thrown into one of magic and danger.
Dragon Mage is fast paced and there is rarely a dull moment where the plot isn't moving forward. The stakes were high and therefore the battle scenes were EPIC so if you like that kind of thing (which I do) then definitely read this! I appreciated that the stakes held true and very real consequences if they failed. It made the story that much easier to get lost in.
For me, however, the true heart of this book is the beautiful and incredibly realistic friendship between Markus and Aram. We get the joy of seeing how they meet and then grow together from boyhood to young men and the friendship just had me in the feels.
Ben Farrows narration is superb and I highly recommend immersion reading along with the audiobook for the best experience.
This book, though over 800 pages, didn't seem overly long, a testament to the masterful writing of ML. If you like S&S, Epic and Classic fantasy do yourself a favour and pick this up.
