About this listen
Alex Kingston reads her brand-new novel featuring River Song, from the worlds of Doctor Who.
1939, New York. Private-eye Melody Malone is hired to find a stolen ruby, the Eye of Horus. The ruby might hold the secret to the location of Cleopatra's tomb - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies.
Can Melody escape the ruby's curse?
1939, New York. River Song, author of the Melody Malone mysteries, is forced to find a reality-altering weapon, the Eye of Horus - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies. River doesn't believe in curses - but is she wrong?
From the top-security confines of Stormcage to the barbarism of first-century Egypt, River battles to find the Eye of Horus before its powers are used to transform the universe. To succeed, she must team up with a most unlikely ally - her own fictional alter ego, Melody. And together they must solve another mystery: is fiction changing into fact - or is fact changing into fiction?

Alex Kingston is amazing
I listened to this book because it was by Alex Kingston and I was not disappointed. Excellent voice acting and great story. Very ‘doctor who’ in that I felt it was predictable but then at the last second it all got turned on it’s head. Great story.

Excellent for River fans
Excellent story overall and fantastic narration, though the story seems to be trying to be too clever at times and has a few Who references that seem more gratuitous than narrative.
I do prefer Angel’s Kiss and would recommend that one for first readers as a better introduction to Melody Malone but it was an enjoyable listen.

This is such fun. I could visualise the entire story such is the strength of the narration and how in character the story is. Fingers crossed another book is in the works.

One of best audio books ever
I'm used to some audiobooks being narrated by one reader and often they can't voice every character well. Alex Kingston gives a this phenomenonal performance. I could not stop listening. she gives every word purpose, every character somehow feels well voiced and yet parodied by the books fictional narrators River and Melody, as Alex switches between that classic New York accent and Alex's British. The story is somewhat confusing but always enjoyable, the way it weaves in and out of two narratives, and how those narratives impact each other is truly magic.
Infact this might be one of the best books to read, if you want to understand how first person narration can enhance a story. Enjoyable from start to end even when the plot is taking a break, just because spending time with this character is, well fun. I truly hope this isn't the last we've seen of River Song or Melody Malone.
