About this listen

Do You Mind If I Smoke? is Fenella Fielding's memoir about her remarkable career spanning seven decades in film, theatre, TV, and radio. It is a warm, witty, and sometimes shocking look back over Fenella's extraordinary life with a host of famous and often unexpected characters from Kenneth Williams and Tony Curtis to Francis Bacon, Muriel Spark, and Federico Fellini. As Fenella says, in her unmistakeable and ever-alluring voice, "It's the best and worst bits of my life. Because nobody wants to hear about the bits in between!"

Fenella Fielding is best known for her film appearances in Carry On Screaming (1966), Doctor in Clover (1966) and Carry On Regardless (1961). She was the voice of the Blue Queen in Dougal and the Blue Cat (1970) and the telephone operator and loudspeaker voice in The Prisoner (1967). Her stage credits include the title roles in Hedda Gabler (1969) and Colette (1970). She's fondly remembered for a number of appearances on the Morecambe & Wise Show (1969-1972) as well as playing The Vixen in Uncle Jack (early 1990s). Her most recent TV appearance was Skins (2012).

"Fenella has long been a national treasure and an inspiration to many. She's a comic original. She invented what she did." - Bill Nighy

"An actress of formidable stature...one of the greats....For at least thirty years I have been completely entranced and amazed by her voice." - Dame Zandra Rhodes

"Glorious, gossipy reminiscences of a vanished showbiz world delivered in a breathless, intimate prose style that mirrors Fenella's familiar, dulcet, dark-brown tones." - Dick Fiddy, BFI TV historian

This audiobook is the result of a long series of meetings with Simon McKay who asked many questions and received many answers. The pair then reviewed Fenella's appointment diaries, some went back to her childhood. Through all of this Fenella and Simon became great friends and spent a lot of time together that led to many more revelations and observations.
