Retsantropolog Josefine Jespersen leder gravrydningen, og samtidig har hun til opgave at studere knoglematerialet, som skal indgå i et forskningsprojekt, før de jordiske rester bliver genbegravet. En aften bliver hendes kollega, arkæologen Rita Magnussen, brutalt dræbt og smidt ned i en åben grav med et kors ridset ind i kraniet. Senere findes også en anden ung kvinde med et indgraveret kors myrdet på åben gade i det indre København.
Alt tyder på, at en satanistisk morder er på fri fod, og politiets efterforsker Alexander Damgaard beslutter sig for at konsultere en eksorcist. Den højtplaceret katolske præst er overbevist om, at Djævelen er på spil, og at årsagen er gravrydningen på Assistens, som han mener har åbnet en port til det onde.
Lotte Petri debuterede i 2009 med krimien Den 5. plage, som blev nomineret til Danske Banks Debutantpris. I den anmelderroste serie om Selma Eliassen er senere udgivet tre bøger.
