 Im Sommer 1947 erreicht der 17-jährige Felix Wallochny nach abenteuerlicher Flucht aus der Altmark Mannheim. In der zerstörten Stadt herrscht Zuzugssperre. Behörden haben den Auftrag, ankommende Flüchtlinge strikt zurückzuweisen. Felix Wallochny kommt dennoch unter. Er lebt zwei Jahre in einem Luftschutzbunker. Der Gymnasiast wird Bau-Hilfsarbeiter, verdient seinen Lebensunterhalt, holt die verpasste Ausbildung nach, und bleibt allein. Als er 1953 seine spätere Frau kennen lernt, heißt es in deren Familie: "Ein Flüchtling - muss das sein?"

Es gab viele Barrieren und Widerstände, sagt der Mannheimer Historiker Thomas Grosser, der die Flüchtlingspolitik und die Integration der Vertriebenen in der Nachkriegsgesellschaft erforscht. Wer als "Rucksackdeutscher" kam, sollte nicht auffallen, keine Ansprüche stellen, sich nützlich machen und niemanden an den verlorenen Krieg erinnern. Eingliederung war kein wechselseitiger Prozess, sondern eine einseitig geforderte Anpassungsleistung.
