Er gibt sich vielmehr geistigen und dichterischen Höhenflügen hin und berichtet neben seinen ausschweifenden Naturbeschreibungen auch mit spöttischem und bissigem Unterton über die verschiedensten Menschen und Zeitgenossen, denen er auf seiner Reise begegnet. Thematisiert werden hierbei insbesondere seine Ausgrenzung aus den Studentenverbindungen, die Universität sowie der aufkeimende "deutsche Nationalismus".
