About this listen
When a city's heroes become its boldest criminals...
For years the firefighters of New York's Engine 99 have rushed fearlessly into hot zones, saving countless lives and stopping devastating blazes in their tracks.
They've also stolen millions from banks, jewellery stores and art galleries. With their inside knowledge and specialist equipment they've become the most successful heist crew on the East Coast.
Their newest member, Andrea 'Andy' Nearland, is not what she seems either. She's an undercover operative, hunting the men of Engine 99 for a host of crimes - including the murder of an off-duty cop and the disappearance of a mother and child.
As the clock counts down to the gang's most daring heist yet, loyalties begin to fray and mistrust boils over. Andy's career is all smoke and mirrors, but infiltrating this crew of 'heroes' might prove her most dangerous job of all...

Big fan
Another fast paced and intriguing story that has characters who are complex and flawed. Recommend!

Edge of your seat thriller
Loved this book. I usually speed up my audiobooks to get through them faster but this was so intense and fast-paced I had to slow the pace because my heart was racing so fast!

The gripping style of Candice Fox is a pleasure for lovers of literature.
Always well-rounded characters, regardless of when and how they are introduced. From the mysterious lead character, to those that are "open books", Candice Fox always manages to draw me in to the grit and grim reality of the world her characters inhabit. Refreshing read.

Disappointing
I’ve loved Fox’s books set in Far North Queensland and was looking forward to a new setting with this one. But I found the story a bit incoherent, not well structured, and the characters shallow. The male narrator was very good, but the female became more and more frantic as the book progressed, speaking much too fast. I felt I was being harangued by the end. Not recommended.

One to leave on the plane
I enjoyed Fox's early novels, especially the Ted Conkaffey series, with its wit and humour, great characters and setting. Devil's Kitchen proves Fox can also write a forgettable American potboiler, which is such a waste of her gifts. Her talent with language is absent, as is her humour, and the flat plot, characters and sex scene are pretty dull. I really hope to hear her own voice again soon.
In addition, the female narrator isn't great, and is hard to listen to.
