Historical Romance with Suspense

When I opened this book, at the suggestion of the Plot Tryst podcast, I didnt realise I was opening a series that lasts well in excess of 20 books covering the Cynster family. However, if they are all written as well as this one I'll be in for a grand treat.

Devil (Sylvester Cynster) comes upon Honoria on a path as a storm is beginning. Much like the storm this is the start of a turbulent relationship between two headstrong characters.

I loved the pair of characters, they were the perfect foil for each other. Despite being headstrong and obstinate they fall deeply in love with each other. I particularly liked that neither character was irritating to me, some headstrong characters can feel a bit petty or selfish which both Honoria and Devil avoided.

In this story the romantic angst is settled relatively early on and you get to see Devil and Honoria working as a team to solve the mystery of the murder and attempted murders that happen throughout the book. They make a beautiful couple with ongoing power struggles as Devil tries to give orders and Honoria proves too strong to give in.

Although the second half of this book is centralised around the crime solving rather than the relationship creation, I would not read this book as a suspense novel. The actual crime itself is relatively obvious, though the pathway to resolve is not direct and includes many plans and investigations to catch the killer.

The audio presentation of this book was very clear and enjoyable. It is read by a single male voice actor. He did a fantastic job of pacing the story, particularly at points of tension or excitement the story rose and fell with the writing perfectly. The only note I will make is that an older gentleman voice won't be for everyone.

This book features death of multiple loved ones (both on page and in memories) which may be disturbing to some readers. There is no nonconsensual sex despite the ongoing power struggles. It also features pregnancy which can be a dealbreaker trope for some readers.
