Igennem det naeste år kom Lippestad taettere på Breivik end nogen anden. Han stod frem over for verdenspressen, og han førte hans forsvar i retssalen. Han gjorde det, fordi Breivik ikke skulle få sin vilje og detonere demokratiet. Men omkostningerne var store. Presset udefra var kolossalt, arbejdsbyrden enorm og gruen i mødet med Breiviks gerninger og logikken bag uhyrlig. Samtidig kostede det på hjemmefronten, men Lippestads hustru og otte børn bakkede ham op. Og så hentede han styrke i de erfaringer med livets skrøbelighed, som hans dødsmaerkede datter Rebekka gav ham.
