Først i 1994 blev romanen udgivet i Frankrig og var øjeblikkelig en litterær sensation. "Det første menneske", der oprindeligt udkom på dansk i 1995, er Camus' egne erindringer om hans barndom og opvækst i en fattig, algerisk familie bestående af hans mor, bedstemor, storebror og onkel.
