About this listen

She never expected to fall for a client, but now that she has, she needs him more than ever.

Years of adversity have molded Henley McClure into the attentive, conscientious psychologist she is today. She lives for her daughter, Jasna, and her work at The Refuge, an exclusive retreat for victims of PTSD. Her life is fulfilling...if a little lonely. But the only man who’s captured her interest, the most standoffish of the mountain retreat’s seven owners, lives in self-imposed isolation. It will take a little vulnerability on her own part, a dead car battery, and the surprising help of her daughter to break through Finn’s defenses.

His Coast Guard career ended in a tragedy that ground Finn “Tonka” Matlick’s life to a halt. For years, his only solace has been the animals he tends to at The Refuge...and admiring Henley from afar. He had no plans to risk potential heartache ever again, until an incident at the retreat had him clinging to Henley like the broken man he is. The kind, patient therapist and her sweet, thoughtful daughter may be the only ones capable of putting him back together.

As Finn slowly heals, and he and Henley grow ever closer, someone is watching. Waiting. Planning. Evil in the making who ultimately wants to watch the world burn, one victim at a time. And they’ll start by targeting one of the people Finn loves most.

Deserving Henley is the second book in the Refuge series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliff-hanger endings.

good story

As a long time Susan fan this is a new female narrator, and I struggled at first to enjoy the book.

yet another great story

Such a beautifully smooth intro into the world of Henley and the Refuge
The previous book gave us a brief insight into the H and h so their tentative interaction isn't a suprise at all.
Susan cleverly drops in a little trigger to kick start the slight roll of action and surprises that make you sad and smiley all at the same time.
The simplicities of life that our awesome author creates is such a wonderful world. And Jasna is just a brilliant character to develop and create a beautiful bridge to our main characters
This seems to be one of Susan's many tropes as children have been in more than one of her novels. For me, it adds some sweet humour or the burst out laughing type.
The H"s love for animals was so endearing and heartbreaking but it gave us the insight needed to know Tonka.
Aaaand then we get to the nitty gritty! Oh boy, the adversary was scary crazy and how it all connected together was edge of your seat brilliant.
These nasty baddies make me wonder where Susan comes up with these types.
But they are oh so perfectly creepy, just adding suspense and hold your breath moments.
I'm so glad when we get a space of dialogue and some warming scenes, just so I could breathe. The slow burn is a given in this series of books as this is 'The Refuge' after all..gently does it.
This tricky topic is one of the many Susan excels at and is explored with respect in this plotline, allowing us to settle, understand and enjoy.
The other awesome thing that had me smiling big time was the crossover characters with other series, It was worth a fist pump. That and Animals!!!
Aaand then we're off again! Action, drama, scary suspense, It just makes me want to close my eyes and not read but I'm on audible. I'd still hear the awful !
When the drama came to a head, I thought, that's it? There's something Susan's not telling. But there's the twist, it was clever, awesome and I didn't see it coming... which begs the question and needing an answer.
There is a character I couldn't figure out.
In true fashion, the plotline melts away into sweet and warm, leaving you relieved and happy.
Love the innuendo to book 3 and can't wait!
Just love Aaron's voice, his tone fitted the quietness of Tonka's character. Hello Teddy, although I've listened to him playing the good H, here, he was able to turn his Inflection to sound a tad creepy. I've never listened to Ramona before but I thought her voice worked well for Henley.
