 Der missratene Sohn Fritz macht der Familie des Metzgermeisters Knippelius wieder einmal Kummer. Die "vornehme" Frau Puttel, eine Kundin, deren Tochter Bärbel sich dummerweise in diesen Fritz verliebt hat, ist ebenfalls unglücklich. Sabinchen, die Tochter des Metzgermeisters, liest zu viel Ritterromane und gibt sich Phantastereien hin: Ihr geliebter Valentin kämpfe heldenhaft und hoch zu Ross um sie. Als schließlich noch ein tollwütiger Hund dazu kommt, sind alle gefordert, um diese kuriose, turbulente Geschichte doch noch zu einem guten Ende zu führen.

Im "Tollen Hund" wirken keine prominenten Laien mit, dafür aber mit Boy Gobert einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Theater- und Filmschauspieler. Mit dabei ist auch Robert Stromberger, der später die erfolgreichen Mehrteiler "Die Unverbesserlichen" und "Diese Drombuschs" schrieb. Die Regie bei dem Hörspiel aus dem Jahr 1953 führte Wolf Schmidt, der damals mit seiner "Familie Hesselbach" erste Triumphe feierte.
