Lächerlich, das ist er, dessen ist sich der Ich-Erzähler in Dostojewskis Erzählung bewusst. Umbringen will er sich und schafft es doch nicht. Stattdessen schläft er ein auf einem Sessel in seiner heruntergekommenen Wohnung und träumt sich hinauf zu einem Stern, der sich als zweite Erde erweist. Die dortigen Bewohner leben wie vor dem Sündenfall in einem paradiesischen Zustand. Doch damit ist es schnell vorbei, als der Träumende eintrifft. Schon in kurzer Zeit hat er sie mit allerlei Übeln der menschlichen Gattung infiziert, die das Paradies zerstören. Bruno Ganz liest Dostojewskis philosophisch-fantastische Erzählung mit dem dafür notwendigen leicht-ironischen Ton.
