 Kurt Wallander ist am Ende. Seit diesem Zwischenfall, bei dem er in Notwehr töten musste, ist er beurlaubt, er lungert herum und trinkt. Daneben unternimmt er einsame Strandwanderungen. Er ist entschlossen, seinen Dienst zu quittieren. Da liest er in der Morgenzeitung vom Tod des Anwalts Sten Torstensson. Der hatte ihn kurz zuvor aufgesucht und um Hilfe gebeten, weil er am mysteriösen Unfalltod seines Vaters zweifelte. Kurt Wallander übernimmt die Ermittlungen.

Bald erfährt er, dass beide für Alfred Harderberg arbeiteten. Für den Mann, der bevorzugt blaue Maßanzüge trägt, in Im- und Export tätig ist und immer lächelt. Undurchdringlich. Im Prinzip hat er dazu auch allen Grund, denn er ist doch der reichste Mann Schwedens und der angesehenste noch dazu. Lässt so einer sich überführen? Kurt Wallander: immer hart am Rande der Dienstvorschrift, immer nah am Lauf der Welt. Ein klassischer Mankell!
