 Die Redlichkeit des jüdischen Korallenhändlers Nissen Piczenik ist sprichwörtlich, und seine Korallen sind die schönsten weit und breit. Selbst aus fernen Dörfern kommen die Bäuerinnen ins kleine galizische Städtchen Progrody, um Schmuck bei ihm zu kaufen. Doch niemand ahnt etwas von der Sehnsucht, die den Korallenhändler befallen hat: Nissen Piczenik, der noch nie aus seiner Heimatstadt herausgekommen ist, sehnt sich nach dem Meer. Tag und Nacht träumt er von den "süßen, herben und salzigen Geheimnissen" der See und gerät auf Abwege. Obwohl er die echten Korallen mehr als alles liebt, verfällt er schließlich dem Betrug mit den falschen.

Joseph Roths berühmteste Erzählung ist eine zeitlose Parabel über Verlangen und Versuchung. Michael Verhoeven führte die Regie, Senta Berger liest.
