Im Mittelpunkt steht die aufwändig geschilderte Kathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris. In ihr spielen die wichtigsten Teile der Romanhandlung, vor allem das Geschehen um die Gestalt des Quasimodo, des Glöckners von Notre-Dame. Der französische Schriftsteller Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) hat Victor Hugo nach Erscheinen des Romans als "Shakespeare des Romans" gefeiert.
