Freeling skrev over 40 bøger, hovedparten krimier og detektivromaner - og kogebøger. Hans mest kendte krimiserie er den om inspektør Van der Valk i Amsterdam. Denne serie blev filmatiseret til BBC i 1970'erne og fik en revival i 1990'erne. Freeling blev født i London, men rejste meget. Han døde i sit hjem vest for Strassbourg i Frankrig, hvor han tilbragte meget af sit senere liv. Han var militærmand og levede senere bl.a. af catering og som kok.
Lidt kuriøst er det, hvordan hans forfattergerning fandt sin start: Han begyndte at skrive under en tre ugers fængselsstraf, som han blev idømt for at stjæle et stykke kalvesteg med hjem fra den restaurant, han arbejdede på - skønt det dog var almindelig praksis i restaurantbranchen, at de ansatte på denne måde hjemtog frynsegoder.
