About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
In Democracy Awakening, American historian Heather Cox Richardson examines how, over the decades, an elite minority have made war on American ideals. By weaponising language and promoting false history, they are leading Americans into authoritarianism and creating a disaffected population.
Many books tell us what has happened over the last five years. In Democracy Awakening, Richardson wrangles America's meandering and confusing news feed into a coherent story to explain how America got to this perilous point, what we should pay attention to, and what the future of democracy holds.

This book increased my understanding of what’s going on.
This book gives a great insight into how the political environment is shaped from the very start of the republic, and how power, thuggery, dirty tricks, mis-/disinformation etc are part of the game. We are reminded that trickle down economics does not work, both through the new deal and also frankly by looking at the results of President Biden’s economic policies. The author also gives a great historical view on racism and discrimination towards natives, blacks (and other non-white people) and women.
I have a feeling this book will be band in parts of Florida, and that’s how you know how important it is!

Why is it so hard?
It was fascinating, as an observer from another country, to trace the history of America's struggle with its own stated raison d'etre. This book takes us back to America's foundations and follows the at times illogical course to the dilemma of 2024. It should be compulsory reading for anyone in the USA who is eligible to vote.
