Raskolnikov, giovane studente di Pietroburgo, a causa di problemi finanziari decide di uccidere una vecchia usuraia e dopo è costretto ad uccidere anche la sorella. Vedendo sfumare il delitto perfetto che si era prefigurato, il protagonista si fa prendere dalla paura e dall’ansia. Il giudice istruttore che indaga sull’omicidio decide di non arrestarlo ma di aspettare la sua confessione. Quest’ultima avviene grazie all’intervento di Sonja, una prostituta innamorata di Raskolnikov che lo porta a capire l’errore.
