Toronto Missing Persons Unit Det Quaid Valor has too much on his plate. His new trainee partner is prickly and aggressive and takes a delight in trying to get under his skin. Quaid’s boyfriend, Det Aslan Doyle, is still recovering from the guilt and trauma of having to shoot a psychopathic child and he can’t bear to touch his service weapon, let alone resume his duties. On top of all that, a lecturer and a student have both gone missing and no one at the local university seems keen to help with Quaid’s enquiries. Is it a case of absent-mindedness or is something more sinister at play?

This was another complex Valor & Doyle mystery and I really enjoyed it! I actually felt quite sorry for Quaid as he struggled with his new partner, Jordyn Frawley but it was amusing to watch these two peas in a pod try to outdo each other. I thought the subplot about Aslan’s PTSD and his mental struggles was deep and compelling and I was absorbed by the missing persons case—you don’t always need a dead body to make an interesting mystery! I am sort of surprised at how rude suspects in this series are to the police, it reminds me a lot of the super-angsty Hazard and Somerset series—is that a North American thing? 🎧 US voice actor NIck J Russo gives another excellent audio performance, I always enjoy his smooth voice!

Something sinister at the university—compelling!

This one dragged. The case was secondary to the MCs romance and their cute cat and a little cheesiness at times. Quaid needs to eat. Seriously, his food aversion is problematic and was like a worrying secondary character.
Nick J Russo is perfection yet again.

Not as Gripping as Previous Books

I've found a new favourite author and narrator. I hope there's more coming soon. If you like a good cop drama with great characters, and a sweet and spicy MM romance, then this is for you. I highly recommend this series.
