But when the aged Ms. Haverhill dies in an apparent suicide, no one remains to resist the Scot’s advances except Wolfe. MacLaren may be fierce, but when the cause is just, Nero Wolfe knows how to play dirty too.

I liked Book 1 better

I didn't mind Book 1, but this book doesn't appear to stay true to character. Archie Goodwin always prized himself on his brain, second only to Nero Wolfe. And I never knew Fritz to worry about clients or doubt Nero in any way. And the amount of weight the narrator (Archie) puts on not shaking hands, or dipping his head an inch or not standing up ... I mean who cares? And now I've Googled "1/7 of a ton" and realised it's not that big - I'm not sure I even understand the whole concept anymore. The story is adequate. But it's not a patch on the originals by Rex Stout.
