Welcome to Rook Hall. The stage is set. The players are ready. By night’s end, a murderer will be revealed.
Ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off a bad case of midlife malaise when he is called to a sleepy Yorkshire town, and the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But one theft leads to another, including the disappearance of a valuable Turner from Burton Makepeace, home to Lady Milton and her family. Once a magnificent country house, Burton Makepeace has now partially been converted into a hotel, hosting Murder Mystery weekends.
As paying guests, a vicar, an ex-army officer, impecunious aristocrats, and old friends converge, we are treated a fiendishly clever mystery; one that pays homage to the masters of the genre—from Agatha Christie to Dorothy Sayers.
Brilliantly inventive, with all of Atkinson’s signature wit, wordplay and narrative brio, Death at the Sign of the Rook may be Jackson Brodie’s most outrageous and memorable case yet.
'How delicious to have Jackson Brodie back, this time in a story that starts off in Agatha Christie's world but soon becomes a landscape that could only have been crafted from the pen of the incomparable Kate Atkinson' Ian Rankin
'Christie would be proud . . . I defy you not to snort with laughter as the novel progresses to its farcical denouement. Atkinson is brilliant' Observer
'Sharp, droll and knowing as ever, Atkinson has huge fun with the set-up; the supporting cast is terrific, and the rueful Brodie, ever more mindful of the passing years, feels like an old friend.' Guardian

Brilliant!
This book strikes the perfect balance between making you laugh, think, and feel deeply. Death at the Sign of the Rook is a masterclass in storytelling, offering a mix of humour, seriousness, and poignancy that keeps you engaged from beginning to end. I'm not sure I'd listen to any future Jackson Brodie books (I hope there are many more to come!) that are not narrated by Jason Isaacs.

Where’s Jackson Brady?
I was so looking forward to a Jackson Brady novel, but really, he was scarcely there.

Revisiting a old friend
Love Kate Atkinson and her new novel is no exception.
Laugh out loud funny with her usual counterpoint poignancy.
And then there’s a dog.

A change of pace
This Jackdon Brodie novel is not as fast paced and plot driven as the previous 5. However, Atkinson' sense of humour and her homage to Agatha Christie and other mystery writers, makes this an enjoyable and cosy read. Loved it! Jason Isaac's reading is excellent.

Never tire of Katie Atkinson’s writing
Wasn’t sure about this book in the opening 20 mins or so, but once a few of the the main characters were introduced: I was in!
It didn’t feel as dark as other Jackson Brodie stories and I enjoyed that.
Everyone’s inner most thoughts are very real and also very funny. Especially loved Lady Milton!
I’m glad I listened to, rather than read, the book. Jason Isaac’s tone is lovely and the use of intonation is brilliant.
I’ll probably listen to it again to glean any great one liners I may have missed, fist time round.

Laugh out loud funny Brodie- brilliantly done
So great to have another Brodie novel to devour. This is a lighter Brodie outing than previous instalments - and is excellent (especially with the deluge of dystopian titles filling the shelves these days. Snore). Kate Atkinson is brilliant (yet again) crafting a rich plot and entertaining characters tip toeing through the tropes of the country house murder mystery with aplomb. Jonathan Isaac’s narration is hilarious. A brilliant partnership. I absolutely loved it.

High quality pastiche
I’m no fan of cosy mysteries in general, but Ms Atkinson is a good enough writer, and Mr Jacobs a good enough narrator, to make this sparkle.
