About this listen

FOUR PEOPLE, TWO ANGELS, ONE CITY

The world has been baptised in nuclear fire. Arcadia, the sole bastion of humanity, is all that is left. Under perpetual dark clouds, none still live who have ever seen the sun, the moon or the stars. In the cramped neon-drenched streets dreams lay scattered like trash. Violence, depravity and a desperate need for self-preservation infests every crack and crevice of the stagnant city.

John Kendrix, adopted son of Billionaire Alexander Kendrix and Dominus Carnifex of the Novus Vaticana walks a thin line between righteous and damned. When his home comes under attack from forces unknown, everything John ever knew and loved becomes twisted by lies and corruption.

A Cyberpunk thriller drenched in Edlritch Mystery and Cyber-Catholicism.

Was good had some problems will get the next book.

The performance is amazing Richard Reed is such a good narrators, Jonathan Keeble, Toby Longworth, R.C. Bray and Richard Reed are the 4 best narrators in the world. His voice just fits the role amazingly and he just brings the characters to life, I would almost suggest the book on his performance alone.

I got this because I saw an add for in on Alternate History Hub.

This contains spoilers.

Lest start with the bad the passing is a bit off which means the city as a character it's self doesn't fully come into its own. It is stated that the city depraved especially the upper class however, we don't see it that much. Other then 2 characters no one is really that evil and depraved those being Diana and the Pope, a few extra throw away side characters would have been nice to show more evil in the world. As for the passing 2 main point stick out where it's just a bit to quick, 1 from the start to the fight on the steps and 2 (spoilers) from John getting shot to the final fight. 1st we get told John is judge jury and executioner and basically acts as the cops, we don't get much of him just stopping everyday crimes. Something between the start and the steps would be good to show how crime filled the city is and show some of johns personality. Just a little fast getting to the big dramatic moment did let it build up as much as it could have. 2nd after John blows up the wall there's a time skip a few this happen then as the final battle is happening a wave of massive riots topple the city and its government, where did the riots and unrest come from. I understand why the people would be rioting but we just don't really hear about the unrest until the end, it was too focused on the main characters. After the wall falls you only see how there handling the new world, not how the everyday person is handling this massive change to there world. If I could change it I would just add in a chapter full stand alone, have it be a kentek guard or police officer. Have him working to contain the protests as they become riots, maybe even have him say he knows he's on the wrong side he just really needs the money. That would humanize the henchmen which was done in points but needed a bit more and it would show what the streets are like. It's just the riots at the end topple the government and there's not enough build up for them. The story focuses too much on the main characters at the main events there's not enough filler of just one of the main characters days or a random side characters between the major events. It feels like 1 1/2 books got crammed into 1.

One side thing is why the the Catholic church all female. Most organizations in the book are really well done as in there structure and actions make sense for the world they live it, which is quite a hard thing and really well done I might add. However the Catholic church was mainly men in real life for many factors that would have still been present in the books world. It's such a big change if you think about it that doesn't really make sense, it did require and explanation as to why but never got one. It wouldn't be so off putting if the other organizations weren't so well done. Like the Vaticana being defended by a company, the police outsourcing to the church or the medical board banning people for not prioritizing who has the most money. All of that is so cool and well done and makes so much sense for this world, the church does not.

The good, the characters are so well done. Alex is such a good villain and it makes so much sense why he did what he did. I would have done the same in his shoes he really in embodies the idea of necessary evil. I also love how John is no saint not just a goody two shoes he also embodies the idea of necessary evil. The details like John uses drugs to help sleep, even 10 years later the faces still haunt him. All the main characters have so much small detail to them they just feel human and alive. That is truly a very well done part of the book. Also some of the subtle world building is also well done even down to the way they say American colony implying it was still a colony before the apocalypses to if you know your history you will figre out the tank they are using is a British landship. small things like that are well done.

Over all this is a 7 / 10 for me I didn't love it but it was enjoyable and I will be getting the second one when it comes out. Do I recommend it, if you like something like Gotrek & Felix than yeah I do, it's not as good as Gotrek & Felix but not far below it.
