About this listen

Detective Superintendent Roy Grace exposes the dark side of internet dating in the intriguing crime novel Dead at First Sight, by award winning author Peter James.

A man waits at a London airport for the love of his life to arrive. Across the Atlantic, a retired cop waits in a bar in Florida’s Key West for his first date with the lady who is his soulmate. The two men are about to discover they’ve been scammed out of almost every penny they have in the world – and that neither women exist.

In the same week, Roy Grace is called to investigate the suicide of a woman in Brighton, that is clearly not what it seems. As his investigations continue, a handsome motivational speaker comes forward. He’s discovered his identity is being used to scam eleven different women online. The first he knew of it was a phone call from one of them saying, ‘You don’t know me, but I thought I knew you’.

That woman is now dead.

Roy Grace realizes he is looking at the tip of an iceberg. Can he bring down the murderous global empire built on clever, cruel internet scams?

Although the Roy Grace novels can be listened to in any order, Dead at First Sight is the fifteenth title in the bestselling series. Discover more of the Brighton detective’s investigations with Find Them Dead and Left You Dead.

Now a major ITV series, Grace, starring John Simm.

I love Roy grace books. This one was a ripper. Lots of killing and bad men. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the next one.

Interesting

Internet fraudsters well they are in the news more and more and Peter James tries in this book to educate and warn, whilst giving us a good story. Well that's what l think he is doing anyhow. Strangely enough l felt this book to be the odd one out of the series but l don't know why....

A Great Read

This is the first of Peter James' novels I have read, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are well formed and interesting. I did find the first hour or two a little confusing at the amount of different characters, but had clicked on by the end. This did make the first part quite confusing, but the second part where the stories all connect, and it becomes one timeline of events, is great.

The narration was excellent, and I did not find the female voices irritating, as I often do with male narrators. Credit to him also, for showing such a range of voices, as the characters are many, and their accents are all different.

Looking forward to reading more.

A major disappointment

This one sounded so intriguing and is based on a highly relevant topic, that of the multi billion industry scam industry. But it's a total mess. There are too many threads, and none of them portrayed convincingly. And there is too much that doesn't ring true - a lot of the conversations were just so irritating, I kept thinking "people DO NOT talk like that". I found it confusing in places too, with a few similar characters and storylines.

It got more far-fetched in how the "victims" responded and I lost interest. It's a shame, it is a rich topic for a novel and could have been done very well.
