About this listen

How far would you go to protect a dead man?

It’s the year 2000 in Dublin and, following some traumatic events, Detective Bunny McGarry is taking a well-earned break from the force. However, just because you’re not looking for trouble doesn’t mean trouble isn’t looking for you.

Bunny’s former partner died in the line of duty under dubious circumstances, but his murky background has suddenly resurfaced, threatening Bunny’s reputation as well. As if that isn’t enough, a young boy is in danger and a woman from the big fella’s past is trapped in a loveless marriage to a monster. They both need Bunny’s help, but he must get to work fast - it seems someone is trying to frame him for murder....

Dead Man’s Sins is a continuation of McDonnell’s critically acclaimed best-selling Dublin Trilogy and mixes high-octane thrills with a distinctly Irish wit.

A feking pleasure

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening this book, just as I have the previous in the Dublin trilogy. the story is humorous and the narrator does a great job at bringing the many colorful caracters to life. I just wish the books where longer as I listen to this book in a day while working.

Way short of the author's usual standards

The performance is great - as usual - and some scenes and their human insights are very rewarding. Unfortunately, the underlying plot just doesn't hang together: maybe the author changed his mind about 'who dunnit' very late in the piece. Some sections of dialogue - and perhaps even whole scenes - though great in themselves, just go on a bit too long.

Perhaps more importantly for the overall uncomfortable 'feel' of the book is that, despite regularly drinking himself into a stupor, our hero retains all his faculties and is able to function normally. He also - inexplicably - retains the love of his neighbours and friends despite his terrible smell and filthy appearance, since for the duration of the book, he apparently never washes or changes his clothes.
