Publisher's Summary

London’s Slough House is where disgraced MI5 spies go to while away what’s left of their washed-up careers. Now they have a chance at redemption. An old Cold War-era spy is found dead on a bus outside Oxford, far from his usual haunts. Slough House’s head honcho, the despicable, irascible Jackson Lamb is convinced Dickie Bow was murdered.

As the agents dig into the circumstances, they uncover a shadowy tangle of ancient Cold War secrets that seem to lead back to a man named Alexander Popov, who is either a Soviet bogeyman or the most dangerous man in the world. How many more people will have to die to keep those secrets buried?

Just a bit hard to follow

Great story and characters. I just found that for an audio book scenes changed without notice but often the accent change was so subtle that I lost my place. Apart from that it was great.

Highly recommend

I have loved all of the series. Mick Herron is a great author and the twists and turns keep you wanting to know more. All of the books have had me looking forward to the next of the series. Sean Barrett is such a fantastic narrator and has the ability to change his voice for all the characters perfectly. I have the next one ready to start. If you love a bit if espioage you won't be disappointed with any of this series.

I lo e a good spy book.

I love the complicated story line which makes me concentrate, but still make sense. I love the characters who seem so practically real, like anyone you may bump up against.
just right mix.

Cracking story

I really enjoyed this book. On one hand I'm sorry I won't be able to watch season 2 of the show without knowing what happens but on three other hand glad I didn't spoil the book

Page turner couldn’t put it down

Fantastic tale of spy craft the twists and turns the characters and the language so descriptive. So much in the le Carrie vein. The main characters are so life like. The narration is superb Barrett is a master narrator. Looking forward to the next book

Masterful, thirst-satisfying spy fiction.

OK. Confession.
I found Mick Herron only because I searched on Sean Barrett. It's what I do with my top-tier audiobook narrators when I'm looking for a new read, because it comes with the territory: Audiobook narrators make or break the experience. And Sean B is right up there with Dick Hill, Will Paton etc. My audiobook narrator Hall-of-Fame' ers who have given me countless hours of brilliant enjoyment. So why not search via them?
And you have to admit that "Mick Herron" sounds more "Mickey Spillane" than "John Le Carre".
Well... serendipity does happen.
I've recently been burned by thinking I've found an author to partially fill the JlC void in my soul. It was Matthew Richardson, and I was severely let down. So I approached Mick Herron with great suspicion, but attracted by the "bunch of losers" blurb, a trope that always promises fun.
I read Slow Horses (Book 1), and though "Wow!". Spy-writing skill is a balancing act: Believability, pace, dialogue, story arc, character likeability, twists that are just right, scene-setting for the future ... every piece has to be *just* right. And it was. But I thought it may be too good to be true, after crashing and burning with Richardson's second and third novels.
So I approached Dead Lions braced for disappointment.
And right from the start, it was like climbing aboard a bus of real people, Eccentric, foibled, but supremely engaging. A group who then take you on a ride that was even better than the first enjoyable encounter.
Mick Herron - you have not needed to fill my le Carre void, because your writing has installed your own shelf in my reading universe. Wonderfully entertaining, and I agree with every great review here. Hidden gem indeed.
And please...pretty please... NEVER give Slough House to anyone but Mr Sean Barrett. He is usually phoneme-perfection - but with the wonderfully fascinating denizens of Slough House he is at stratopheric brilliant best.
Jackson Lamb is the overweight, farting (sorry!), anti-hero that I never expected to delight in. And much of that is thanks to Mr Barrett.
I'd already be into the next SH novel - but I have to pace myself. This is too delectable to gorge oneself on.

Nice

Announce your chapters though. Admittedly, it’s just so I can find my place after I’ve fallen asleep, but Jackson Lamb wouldn’t put up with it.

What a great writer/narrator combination!

Another terrific book, well and truly in the best of the Le Carre genre. Narration is wonderful, gravelly and contemplative, what a feast!
