About this listen

A young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm, setting her on a dangerous path where those she loves are not the only ones at risk…
*THE INSTANT TOP 5 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER*
THERE ARE MANY LEGENDS ABOUT MY MOTHER…
Raised far away on the moon, Xingyin was unaware she was being hidden from the Celestial Emperor – who exiled her mother for stealing the elixir of immortality. But when her magic flares and reveals her, Xingyin is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.
Alone, powerless, and afraid, Xingyin makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. In disguise, she trains alongside the Emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, despite the passion which flames between them.
Vowing to rescue her mother, Xingyin embarks on a quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies. But when forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, Xingyin must challenge the ruthless Emperor, leaving her torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos…
Inspired by the legend of Chang’e the Moon Goddess, this captivating debut weaves Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of love and family, immortals and magic.

Beautiful romantic magical tale
This is a beautiful romantic magical tale which is gentle yet with a strong female lead. I enjoyed it so much! Can’t wait to read the next one. The narrator has a lovely voice and is perfect for the story.

Pretty Good
though i found this story a bit slow to get into, it does improve a lot and becomes quite an interesting tale, likeable characters and a great narrator. it really only suffers one pet peeve, as is all too common in these types of books, i found the female character often to be portrayed as naive, posing stupid questions that should have been obvious. i suppose a true reflection of what i think of this story is that though its quite short and generally i prefer 30+ hour books, I'm not craving to listen to the next book in the current non existing series though it could also be because the story felt conclusive, at least that part of her life. I honestly don't know whether to recommend this story that cost me $15 or not so seek others opinions too but i can wholeheartedly recommend the narrator, she did a great job creating very individual characters.

Amazing
First sci fi book I’ve read/listened to since before hunger games was released as a movie.
It took a chapter for me to get into it but then after that, I was hooked.

C-drama in book form (that's good)
K-drama is big in western fandom right now, but C-drama is coming, I'm sure of it. What fantasy C-drama lacks in originality it makes up for in a rich tradition of intrigue, factions, battles, magic and crazy heavenly characters you can enjoy over and over in different tales. Also lots and lots of over the top romance, which still feels deliciously indulgent every time. This is absolutely c-drama in book form. Thankfully the female MC pulled a little from Western tradition and was a bit more kick-ass than some of her screen sisters. The only thing I don't love about c-drama is the often miserable production values and guess what? Audiobooks are much better in that regard. So whether or not you've ever dipped into Chinese fantasy you should strap on your melodrama suit, grab get a box of tissues and enjoy the ride.
