Born one of the Powered in a world starving for superhuman defenders, Boyd is both blessed and cursed—blessed in that he was born Powered, possessing superpowers on a world in desperate need of each Hero able to defend humanity from a hostile planet, but cursed in that he is one of the Changed. The Changed are those Powered who were transformed into creatures from long-dead Old Earth’s myths and legends. Changed have the unfortunate tendency to behave exactly as they appear. So when the young Boyd, who had always aspired to be a Hero, Changed into a demon during puberty, his aspirations turned to dust. Despite what seemed like an insurmountable challenge, he was shaken but remained unbroken.

Even as his dreams of heroism seem crushed, Boyd clings to hope, resilient in the face of adversity. With steely resolve, he channels his energy into honing his skills, aspiring to rise above his Changed nature. Charged with protecting walled cities from hostile superpowered threats, he remains committed to The Authority's mission on the newly settled planet – a haven born from Earth's ruins.

But destiny isn't finished toying with Boyd. Love's initial spark reveals a startling truth – he's an Enhancer, wielding a power that demands a heavy toll. Grappling with a mentor's spiteful influence, Boyd finds his path strewn with insurmountable challenges. Faced with the impossible, he must confront the monstrous demands thrust upon him, even if it means breaking the promises he once held sacred. Can Boyd reconcile his newfound mission with his unwavering principles, or will the clash lead to a transformation he can't escape?

A total lack of agency, state sponsored abuse and rape, leaving me nauseous and angry

I only made it to chapter 6, if it gets better I can stomach any more to find out. The child abuse and indoctrination was pretty bad, but the bad guys need to kick puppies to prove how evil they are, and those bits are mercifully brief. The state sponsored rape of the mc, however, appears to be an ongoing plot point. Apparently this book is about superheroes, but there's little super or heroic in it so far. No wonder, no sense of possibility, no great enemy or injustice to overcome bar those inflicted by the government the heroes serve. There is nothing worth the MC's misery and suffering to justify reading any further.

And the narrators performances? Boyd's voice is laughable and the ladies still have their young girls voice after the characters are over the age of consent, which is a deeply uncomfortable choice.
