Auf dem Ritterturnier zu Ehren des Grafen Primus Rocca erschlägt ein Recke im Rausch zwei Dutzend Besucher. Daraufhin bricht eine Massenpanik aus, in der mehrere Personen spurlos verschwinden, darunter auch die Gräfin. Fast drei Jahrzehnte später taucht eine der Verschwundenen wieder auf: die Zofe der Gräfin und sie ist kein Jahr gealtert. Allerdings hat man ihr die Zunge herausgerissen. Primus Rocca, sein Sohn Aurel und eine Delegation suchen den alten, verwunschenen Turnierplatz auf, in der Hoffnung, auch die verschollene Gräfin zu finden. Doch was in der Au auf sie wartet, verschlägt selbst den Kühnsten der Gefährten den Atem.
