Es war einmal ein armer Hirtenbub, der hütete das Vieh hoch oben im Gebirge. Seine Eltern waren schon lange tot, und er hatte nur noch eine Stiefmutter, und die war böse und konnte hexen. Sie war schlecht gegen den armen Hirtenbub, und er wäre schon lange davongelaufen, wenn er sich nicht so sehr vor ihr gefürchtet hätte. Denn sie konnte doch hexen – und wenn jemand hexen kann, so ist das nicht angenehm für die anderen Leute, und man muss sich gar sehr in acht nehmen.
