Rainer Erler wurde 1933 in München als Sohn eines Studiendirektors geboren. Schon während seiner Schulzeit arbeitete er an Schul- und Studiobühnen, bevor er seine ersten Fernseh- und Filmerfahrungen als Assistent unter anderem bei Paul Verhoeven und Franz Peter Wirth sammelte. Daneben schrieb er Theaterstücke, Filmkritiken und Drehbücher. Erlers Filme, zu denen parallel meist auch eine Romanfassung entstand, gehören in die Kategorie der "Science Thriller". Oft lange bevor die Brisanz der Themen gemeinhin erkannt wurde, befasste Erler sich bereits mit Themen wie Organhandel, Genmanipulation und Atomverbrechen.
