In der sengenden Hitze des exotischen Landes werden sie Zeugen eines Menschenraubes und geraten zwischen die Fronten des Thronfolgekampfs in der Hauptstadt Gasalabad. Eine entscheidende Rolle spielt dabei ein magisches Artefakt - das Auge von Gasalabad. Schließlich wird die Gruppe selbst von Sklavenhändlern überfallen und auseinandergerissen. Havalds Geliebte Leandra bleibt verschollen. Damit nicht genug, es erweist sich, dass die Feinde, welche die Neuen Reiche bedrohen, ihnen bis nach Bessarein gefolgt sind. Schlimmer noch: Anscheinend legt sich Thalaks Schatten nun auch über diese fernen Gegenden, um sie zu unterjochen…
