About this listen

Beware what lies beneath....

One fateful, starry night, three friends embark on a secret camping trip, but only two return home. Thirty years later, the body of a teenage boy rises from the depths of England's biggest reservoir and threatens to expose a killer who has lain dormant...until now.

Detective Chief Inspector Ryan returns from honeymoon to face danger from all sides. In the depths of Kielder Forest, a murderer has escaped justice before and will do anything to protect the secrets of the past. Meanwhile, back at Northumbria CID, an old foe has taken the helm as Superintendent and is determined to destroy Ryan at any cost.

Who will prevail in Ryan's most dangerous case yet?

Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunit set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

Loving this series

Love this series. The story is great and I don’t think anyone could narrate it better than Jonathan Keeble.

Interesting

Not bad as a story with the ever-engaging Ryan. This story seemed shorter or less complex in its plot than usual for some reason.
The new boss plays an integral part and another protagonist is introduced to be further discovered in the future.
I wonder if a pre-prequel will be created to further elucidate the character if the new DS?

A Worthy New Setup

I was waiting to see who the new antagonists would be after the Hacker and the Circle. And I was not disappointed with Ryan's new enemies!

That said, this story was more clearly character-driven and the actual mystery was a little more lost in the drama, but that is in-keeping with the tropes of cold-case style mysteries And given how much I love this series, that made it no less enjoyable.

Another brilliant story

Louise Ross I wonder where you come up with these evil characters? Can't wait for the next book...may you continue writing for a very long time.

Another half book

Annoyed with myself that I find L J Ross such a good read, as with his previous 2 books - these are half books in length and contents which unfortunately I do not have the control to pay full price for.

Unfairly short.

Any additional comments?

I do like the writing by LJ Ross and the great group of characters that inhabit her stories. My only complaint is that the recordings aren't long enough. For the same price I can listen to 11-15 hours worth of amazing high quality stories by, for example, Stuart McBride or Peter May which are obviously much better value for money. I feel Cragside and Dark Skies should have been one book and like others, I too feel somewhat cheated that the "Jen Lucas" situation has obviously been dragged out to fill goodness knows how many more books. It also seems like we have an almost identical second "Hacker" in the making. Thought that horse had already bolted !! Success it seems spawns a bit of arrogance and disregard for the reading ( or listening ) public who pays the bills. Jonathan Keeble does an amazing job but I had a bit of trouble a few times discerning between Phillips and Hunter then again between Ryan and Armstrong. Love the accent he gives McKenzie.
