About this listen

The peaceful Eldarin were the last of three ancient races. The mystical Oltor, healers and poets, had fallen before the dread power of the cruel and sadistic Daroth. Yet in one awesome night, the invincible Daroth had vanished from the face of the earth. Gone were their cities, their armies, their terror. The Great Northern Desert was their only legacy. Not a trace remained for a thousand years....

The War of the Pearl had raged for seven years, and the armies of the four Duchies were exhausted and weary of bloodshed. But the foremost of the Dukes, Sirano of Romark, possessed the Eldarin Pearl and was determined to unravel its secrets.

Then, on one unforgettable day, a dark moon rose above the Great Northern Desert, and a black tidal wave swept across the land. In moments the desert had vanished beneath lush fields and forests, and a great city could be seen glittering in the morning sunlight. From this city reemerged the blood-hungry Daroth, powerful and immortal, immune to spear and sword. They had only one desire: to rid the world of humankind forever. Now the fate of the human race rests on the talents of three heroes: Karis, warrior woman and strategist; Tarantio, the deadliest swordsman of the age; and Duvodas the Healer, who will learn a terrible truth.

Read by Homer Todiwala.

great book but horrible naration

Todiwala narrated this like a man who was reading a financial report . He did well with actual characters dialog but read the background as if He did not seem to know what punctuation is. I almost gave up after 2nd chapter. Did well with character conversation and thoughts only. The book itself, story and characters deserved better!

do the editors not listen to the audio before its released? this was just horrid to listen to. i am a huge fan of David Gemmel and this story had promise but was ruined by the wrong narrator.

Not his Best Work

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No - Mainly due to the narrator, he is just awful for this sort of novel and genre, unfortunately completely destroyed my immersion

Would you recommend Dark Moon to your friends? Why or why not?

No - Mainly due to the narrator, he is just awful for this sort of novel and genre, unfortunately completely destroyed my immersion. The story starts our great, one of my favourite characters is the main antagonist so I was determined to stick to it but the story loses steam about the mid way through and becomes a bit of a chore to finish. It just slows down significantly with several small subplots forming which feel a bit more like filler then substance and take away from the most exciting part of the story which is the main antagonist. it is enjoyable but not his best work by far. As a huge Gemmell fan who has read all of his books multiple times, i would say this is one of his more weaker novels, even if the concepts are great.

What didn’t you like about Homer Todiwala’s performance?

the narrator just does not have the range of tones for the role and his choice of voices and tones just does not work for the feel of the story IMOP. i found the tone distracting at best, although i did just finish listening to Morningstar by Gemmell and that reader was AMAZINGLY GOOD.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

YES

Any additional comments?

If you love the drenai series then i recommend you read the book and skip the audible version personally, i enjoyed reading it much more than i have listening to it.

David Gemmell, need I say more.

As always Gemmell provides a great story very out of the ordinary for him. As well as having an honest to god functional Bard as a character with magic n all.
Though the story is great the quality of the book has been my worst experience with Audible so far. 3x so far in chapter 12 has the audio just kind of phased in mid sentence due to poor editing. The narrator is good enough but not the best I have heard has a strange habit of changing voices for the same character.

Gemmell creates moments to remember

A choppy story but a couple of great characters and scenes. Gemmell is efficiently enjoyable.

A good story

I was unsure about the narrators performance to start with but I got used to it. It isn’t how I read the book in my head at all.

I really like the character Tarantio and the Daroth are formidable villians.

terrible narration

I truly love David Gemmell, however, i couldn't follow the story as the narration was absolutely terrible. I listened to the end but I'll go read this story in print and hopefully Todiwala hasn't ruined it all for me.

Would not recommend this to anyone. There are many better readers if you want to hear David Gemmell's wonderful novels.
