Publisher's Summary
If you like dark and compelling crime thrillers, then you’ll love the acclaimed DCI Yorke series. Three best-selling, high-octane serial killer thrillers in one pause-resisting box set!
"An explosive and visceral debut with the most terrifying of killers. Wes Markin is a new name to watch out for in crime fiction." (best-selling crime author Stephen Booth)
Book one: One Last Prayer for the Rays
The disappearance of a young boy. An investigation paved with depravity and death. Can DCI Michael Yorke survive with his body and soul intact?
With Yorke's small town in the grip of a destructive snowstorm, the relentless detective uncovers a missing boy’s connection to a deranged family, whose history is steeped in violence. But when all seems lost, Yorke refuses to give in, and journeys deep into the heart of this sinister family for the truth.
And what he discovers there will tear his world apart.
The Rays are here. It's time to start praying.
Praise for One Last Prayer for the Rays:
"A pool of blood, an abduction, swirling blizzards, a haunting mystery, yes, Wes Markin’s One Last Prayer for the Rays has all the makings of an absorbing thriller. I recommend that you give it a go." (best-selling author Alan Gibbons)
Book two: The Repenting Serpent
A vicious serial killer slithers from the darkness, determined to resurrect the ways of a long-dead civilization.
When the ex-wife of one of DCI Michael Yorke’s closest allies is left mutilated and murdered, Yorke and his team embark on their greatest test yet. A deeply personal case that will push them to their very limits.
And as Yorke’s team are pulled further into the dark, the killer circles, preparing to strike again.
Book three: The Silence of Severance
Your wedding day should be the most unforgettable day of your life. And this is one wedding that will never be forgotten.
When a police officer’s wedding day ends in brutality and chaos, DCI Michael Yorke is pulled away from his own wedding and into the bloodiest chain of events Wiltshire has ever seen.
As a heatwave tightens its grip on Salisbury, Yorke and his team face a race against time to find the most sinister and intelligent adversary they have ever faced: Christian Severance. But as the team chase Severance into the shadows of a dark past, Yorke’s own history starts to drag itself into the present.
Can they stop Christian Severance before he achieves the unthinkable? And will Yorke survive the revelations that claw at him from the darkness?

Depressing and Disturbing
Not enough information to get to know and empathise with the main characters and what I did glean from the story of their lives and character I didn’t like. No one is happy and interpersonal relationships are all fraught. I found it difficult to identify or admire or even remember the characters. I can see how others would like these books but for me the stories were hard to listen to being unrealistic, gratuitously violent and convoluted. I’ll be having nightmares about pigs and tongues and creepy men with long hair for months

Dark
My husband really enjoyed this series but I found it a bit too dark. The "bad" characters aren't just bad, they're seriously disturbed and evil, and the "good" characters all seem to be plagued by violent pasts or sad, depressing (and often violent) presents. The background of extreme cold and stormy, or extreme heat and stormy, depending on which book you were reading, also adds to the overall depressive / oppressive feel. I get that crime novels aren't all about sunshine and kittens, but this was a tad extreme for me. Still a good read, just not a 5/5 for me.

A try hard story
This is another attempt to cash in on the popularity of writers like Ann Cleeves. The main detective is also a marathon runner who never runs and is beset with the myriad of personal problems that are used to puff the story. I stopped after the second book when it talks about Aztec sacrifice. Really!
