About this listen

WELCOME TO NIGHT CITY.

THE CITY OF DREAMS.

IF IT HASN'T CHANGED YOU YET, IT WILL . . .

AND IF IT DOESN'T KILL YOU, YOU MIGHT COME OUT THE OTHER SIDE AS A LIVING LEGEND.

In neon-drenched Night City, a ragtag group of strangers have just pulled off a heist, robbing a convoy transporting a mysterious container belonging to Militech. The only thing the group has in common is that they were blackmailed into participating in the heist - and they have no idea just how far their mysterious employer's reach goes, or the purpose of the artifact they stole.

This newly formed gang - composed of a veteran turned renegade, a sleeper agent for Militech, a computer nerd, a therapist, a ripperdoc, and a techie - must learn how to overcome their differences and work together, lest their secrets be unveiled before they can pull off the next deadly heist.

Set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, one of the bestselling video games of recent years, this electrifying novel from acclaimed Polish SF writer Rafal Kosik follows a group of strangers as they discover that the dangers of Night City are all too real.

Perfect Cyberpunk 2077 take.

This take is written and read very well. It fits the atmosphere and universe perfectly. I’ll be listening to this several times.

Cherami really brings the story to life

Love Cherami's voice, and the personas she brings to the different characters in this story.

Performance

The narration is brilliant. The story however is difficult to follow. I've played the game but still was confused between where we were and who's pov we followed at any given moment. Still enjoyable but a bit difficult to get through

A Fantastic Performance

Definitely the highlight of this audiobook is Cherami's performance. It's like sitting at the back of a dark Night City bar with V herself as she tells you the story. And the generally naturalistic prose supports this reading. :) However, the scene and perspective changes in the text which were probably clearly marked by double paragraph breaks, are reduced to only a short pause in the audiobook, which leads to some confusion for the listener. Overall, the excellent narration does a lot to elevate a story that is serviceable though sometimes lacking in clarity and consistency. It offers some interesting characters, a few excellent set pieces, and a few moments of greatness. as a whole package, it is definitely worth listening.

Great listen, great performance.

I enjoyed this book. The story was solid, the voice performance compelling.
You'll likely figure out where it's going but it's the journey not the destination.

Really enjoyed the performance!

Cherami did a great job on this book. The story was a great adventure of intertwining paths of the characters. Thrilling albeit confusing at times due to the tech speak so occasionally I was a bit lost on what was going on but this just makes me want to listen to it again and also play the game again! More cyberpunk stories please!

Awesome storyline much to think about

It’s cyberpunk so it is gritty and grim. The presenter did an awesome job. One problem is that I find some voices easy to follow and some I struggle to make out what is being said. I struggled here. From what I have read it may have something to do with sound quality.

Reads like fan fiction

For a story called no coincidences, the plot is full of lucky coincidences in order to perpetuate the bland narrative. This isn't a particularly interesting take on the Cyberpunk world. It's by the numbers nihilism lacking any subtlety whatsoever.

Despite this, all the main characters behave charitably towards one another when they've little reason to do so. It's like a poorly run tabletop game of Cyberpunk where the game master has forbidden the players from betraying each other, even when there's good reason to do so. It comes across as very lazy writing. Ron, in particular, gets ham fisted into a series of contradictions that render his character incomprehensible. His inability to recognise one thing in particular, even when going through a very similar process with the same person, is astonishingly stupid.

The voice actress has been directed poorly. Lots of angry emotional outbursts from characters that are supposed to be cool headed professionals. The writing doesn't help this, with the lack of subtlety.

This is written for idiots that can't read between the lines, so if you want something completely unchallenging, this may be for you.
