About this listen

A desert highway. A remote town. A murder that won’t stay hidden.

New Year’s Eve, 1989. Eighteen-year-old Ingrid Mathers is hitchhiking her way to Alice Springs. Bored, hungover and separated from her friend Joanne, she accepts a lift to the remote town of Cutters End.

July 2021. Detective Sergeant Mark Ariti is seconded to a recently reopened case, one in which he has a personal connection. Three decades ago, a burnt and broken body was discovered in scrub off the Stuart Highway, 300km south of Cutters End. Though ultimately ruled an accidental death, many people - including a high-profile celebrity - are convinced it was murder.

When Mark’s interviews with the witnesses in the old case files go nowhere, he has no choice but to make the long journey up the highway to Cutters End.

And with the help of local Senior Constable Jagdeep Kaur, he soon learns that this death isn’t the only unsolved case that hangs over the town...

Good Yarn

This book is well crafted - believable people and circumstances, thoughtful plot and enough twists to keep it interesting to the last page. It is also very well read.

Beautifully written Australian crime

Margaret Hickey writes crime exceptionally well. Her characters ring true, she seems to understand country people and write about towns and remote settings in a very believable way and her stories are not predictable. Part way through, as a reader of a lot of crime novels, I thought I had worked out ‘who did it’ and I was wrong. I initially read Margaret’s second book ‘Stone Town’ and I liked it and Detective Mark Ariti so much that I wanted to listen to ‘Cutters End’. I’m glad I did. I hear there is another book coming and I’m really looking forward to it. Margaret Hickey has immense talent.

Brilliant. LOVED it

I loved this book, I loved that it was set in places I knew, many a time have I driven along the Sturt highway and wondered how many bodies are out there that would never get found.

Engrossing and insightful.

I really enjoyed the plots many twists and turns, and was kept guessing until the end. The harsh conditions of life in remote rural outback Australia are vividly brought to life, you really feel the heat, dust and isolation.
For Ingrid, the devastating consequences of hitching a ride during her youth in the outback highlight the disparity between the remembered freedom of the eighties and the failure of the legal system to protect female victims of violence and domestic abuse.
Through Acting Inspector Mark, tasked with re-investigating this cold case, the complex anomalies of the human condition and the duality of our natures are explored by the author with sensitivity and compassion.
A great read, thoroughly recommended!

Loved this book

I travelled Australia when I was 17, and this story was very relatable to life back in the early 80’s. it is a well crafted telling of the horrors and the hero’s of our Australian characters. Young people were vulnerable and looking through the lens of time I can see that so much more clearly now. This is a captivating tale with believable characters and landscape. A must read!
